I will be posting more about this amazing hummingbird. His name is Fabio (and he deserves it!)
This is the seventh winter that I’ve had Anna’s hummingbirds coming to my home here on Vancouver Island, Canada. Unlike the rufous hummingbirds, who used to be our “regulars,” Anna’s hummingbirds stay all winter.
I have had several individual birds that I can recognize who return year after year (I don’t see them much over summer, but they are pretty constant through the fall and winter). Some of those birds have got to “know me” – meaning that they have got used to me moving around, so I can get fairly close and get some good photos without scaring them.

Fabio is completely different! He has been curious about me right from the start. And it’s not just about food – he often buzzes my face as he is going past, just for fun. If he sees me moving around inside, he hovers at the window, spying on me.
There are always lots of feeders full of food around – two in the backyard, where he hangs out, as well as more at the sides and front of the house. He has lots of options – but he comes down to eat out of my hand just for fun!
Like I said, there will be more of Fabio coming in future posts… but for now, here is a short little video of a great hummingbird interaction he and I had today! If you want to be the first to find out when new videos and photos (and eventually my book) are published, please sign up for updates over at my Contact page. And enjoy my new little friend:
